Blue Mountain Hosts 11th Annual Keep Winter Cool Event

Cold temperatures and snowy weather go hand-in-hand with the winter season and Blue Mountain wants to keep it that way.  To help raise awareness about the potential impacts of climate change and encourage skiers and snowboarders to take steps to reduce their own environmental impact, Blue Mountain Resort will be hosting its 11th annual Keep Winter Cool event on Thursday March 13, 2014.

Join us in the Blue Mountain Village Events Plaza from 11:00am – 3:30pm for some educational and fun programs for the entire family. This year’s event will feature everything from Elephant Thoughts 18-foot inflatable polar bear, McMaster University’s solar racing car, Earth Rangers’ Animal Ambassadors, an off-the-grid DJ show, the Collus Renewable Energy Trailer, and more!  Reinforcing Blue Mountain’s corporate commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of our operations, Keep Winter Cool stands as one of Blue’s signature March break events.

STEPS: A Journey to the Edge of Climate Change & NORTH OF THE SUN FILM SCREENING FUNDRAISER
Blue Mountain is also pleased to feature two highly acclaimed films as part of the year’s Keep Winter Cool event.

STEPS: A Journey to the Edge of Climate Change was a 2013 finalist in the Banff Mountain Film Festival.  In the winter of 2012/2013, Ride Greener and Coupdoeil Film dared to take the step of making the impossible possible: they produced the first climate friendly snowboard and ski film. In STEPS, the effects of climate change are shown in parallel with the allure of winter sports. The film pursues the question of whether or not snowboarding and skiing in today’s world can be done in harmony with nature.

North of the Sun was a 2013 Grand Prize Winner at the Banff Mountain Film Festival.  Tucked between the cold Atlantic Ocean and the rocky slopes of a remote, arctic island, two young Norwegian adventurers discover their own private playground. They build themselves a cabin out of driftwood and other cast-off materials while clearing the beach of debris, then spend the long winter skiing and surfing in the haunting low light. “If it’s possible to have a perfect adventure film, then this year’s Grand Prize Winner comes about as close as you can get. A highly original adventure that’s captured in a film planned to perfection: a wonderful story, engaging personalities, breathtaking camera work, and expertly edited.” – Richard Else
The film screenings will take place on Thursday March 13 in Weider Room (Blue Mountain Inn) in conjunction with Blue Mountain Resort’s annual Keep Winter Cool event.  Doors open at 7PM. Screening will run from 7:30PM to approximately 9:30PM (including an intermission and draws for door prizes).
Tickets are $10.00 each and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to The Environment Network to provide funding for a variety of local community environmental programs.

Blue Mountain Hosts Sony SnowCrown March 10-16

The biggest freestyle ski and snowboard event of the season has found a home at Blue Mountain Resort. Sony SnowCrown, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink, is a week-long competition that celebrates winter action sport competition, culture and camaraderie.

As Canadian Freestyle Championships, SnowCrown competition provides juniors, amateurs and pros with an opportunity to meet, greet and compete with some of the world’s top freestyle athletes in freeski, slopestyle, halfpipe and big air. To date, thirteen of Canada’s Olympic and National Team freestyle athletes are registered to compete at SnowCrown including: Brad Martin, Mercedes Nicoll, Derek Livingston, Katie Tsuyuki, Jenna Blasman, Alex Duckworth, Tyler Nicholson, Crispin Lipscomb, Calynn Irwin, Breanna Stangeland, Brooke Voight, Matts Kulisek, Trevor Niblett. Full athlete profiles can be found at www.canadasnowboard.ca.

With $50,000 in cash and prizing at stake, AFP Gold Sanctioned Freeskiing and a 4-star TTR rating in Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Big Air, Sony SnowCrown represents one of Blue Mountain’s biggest on-hill competitions to date. To aid in their on-hill builds, Blue Mountain recruited legendary course builder Ryan Neptune. A former US Snowboard Champion, Neptune leverages his 30 years of ski industry knowledge to develop the facilities that will lead the way to the future of snow sport.

Sony SnowCrown represents unparalleled first domestic access to returning Canadian freestyle athletes. “Imagine how huge this is for kids coming up through the ranks,” said Jesse Fulton of 365 Sports – the organizer of SnowCrown events. With some spaces still left to fill, Fulton says SnowCrown is “taking registrations and (expecting) the list of Canadian winter action sports heroes to continue to grow.”
